Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is where Caribbean beauty meets culture, history, music, food, and beachside luxury without needing a billionaire budget. From the colonial streets of Santo Domingo to the resorts of Punta Cana, the mountains of Jarabacoa, and the beaches of SamanĂ¡, this island gives travelers a little bit of everything.

Language

The language spoken in the Dominican Republic is Spanish.
Some common phrases are:
Hola – Hello
Gracias – Thank you
Por favor – Please

currency

The currency used throughout the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP). US dollars are widely accepted at hotels, resorts, and many tourist-facing businesses, but you’ll get better value using pesos for local restaurants, taxis, and markets. ATMs are common in cities like Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Weather

The weather in the Dominican Republic is warm and tropical year-round, with daytime highs typically in the mid-to-high 80s°F (29-31°C). The dry season runs roughly December through April, while hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September and October.

  • Transportation Tip – Uber, InDrive, and DiDi all operate in the Dominican Republic. Uber is the most convenient option in Santo Domingo, Santiago, and Puerto Plata, and you can pay directly with a debit or credit card — no cash needed. InDrive and DiDi typically require cash, and drivers rarely carry change, so bring small bills if you go that route. If you’re planning to travel beyond the city you’re staying in, renting a car is often the more convenient choice — it’s what I use whenever I’m heading out of Santo Domingo.
